Local Government Association (LGA) staff face pay cuts of at least £30,000 under modernisation plans.
A consultation on the future operating model was released yesterday, with fresh job descriptions across the board, leaving staff reeling at the scale of change.
The association has suggested proposals will lead to around 60-70 staff redundancies, with significant downgrades of roles. However, documentation seen by The MJ and union opinions suggest the figure will be closer to 150.
One insider suggested the plan had gone down ‘like a bucket of cold sick’ with staff in tears as they heard the proposals.
Regional advisers face some of the biggest changes, with the jobs downgraded and pay cuts of at least £30,000 – with some sources estimating it will be closer to £50,000.
A source said: ‘These are the people who are dealing with councils directly. They are being downgraded to a grade 6.
‘How are they going to be taken seriously [as more junior staff]? How are they going to be advising a council on exiting the chief executive? All the expertise will be gone.’
The LGA has declined to share a copy of the proposals as they are out for consultation for 45 days and are not the final structure.
