Reform UK-led Durham CC needs to do more to address residents’ concerns around hate crime, a Local Government Association peer review has found.
The review said that ‘further work is needed’ to tackle hate crime concerns and ensure that ‘everyone feels safe, included and able to contribute to the county’s future’.
It warned the council it had a legal responsibility to promote social cohesion and that ‘visible leadership’ on the issue was required.
The council’s leaders were also urged to ensure they make a ‘clear distinction between national political debates or online commentary and official council policy’.
