Birmingham crackdown: graffiti crew warned off the wall

An individual linked to a graffiti crew responsible for widespread tagging across Birmingham has been issued a community protection warning (CPW), officials say.

The action follows an intelligence-led operation by Birmingham City Council and West Midlands Police, which drew on reports from residents, partner organisations and local community groups.

Served at the persons’ home, the CPW prohibits them from engaging in graffiti-related activity and from carrying aerosol cans or other items commonly used for tagging.

Graffiti is classed as an environmental crime and a form of anti-social behaviour. Authorities say it can damage neighbourhoods, increase fear of crime, reduce property values and divert council and business resources into clean-up efforts.

Local volunteers have played a crucial role in removing tags from shops, parks, walkways and residential areas across the city.

The investigation is ongoing, with further CPWs and community protection notices being considered as authorities seek to unmask other members of the illegal graffiti crews operating in Birmingham.

Waqar Ahmed, assistant director for community safety and resilience at Birmingham City Council, said: ‘Graffiti vandalism causes real harm to residents, businesses and the wider environment.

‘We hope this demonstrates that we will not hesitate to act robustly to deter others and safeguard our communities.’

Residents and businesses are encouraged to report graffiti or suspicious behaviour promptly.
